Medical Imaging Sciences

B.S.

The School of Arts and Sciences-Newark at Rutgers University-Newark and the Rutgers School of Health Professions (SHP) offer a joint bachelor of science degree in medical imaging sciences (MIS). Students choose one of the two programs: cardiac sonography and diagnostic medical sonography.

Music

B.A.

The undergraduate music program offers a major and minor in music; a master's of art degree in jazz history and research is offered through the Graduate School-Newark. In addition, courses and performance opportunities are available to Rutgers students in all types of music.

Neuroscience & Behavior

B.A.

Neuroscience and Behavior is an innovative, cross-disciplinary major aimed at understanding some of the most complex questions in science. How does the brain work? How does the mind emerge from the brain? What are the causes of mental disorders? The major provides students with broad knowledge of neuroscience through coursework drawn equally from the biological and behavioral sciences. Students in the major will also develop their quantitative and laboratory skills, learn to communicate scientific findings, and become critical and independent thinkers.

Philosophy

B.A.

“Philosophy” means "love of wisdom." Philosophers seek to understand fundamental truths about themselves, human nature, the world in which they live, and their relationships to the world and to each other. Philosophy’s method of inquiry differs from science since it relies mainly on thought as opposed to observation and experiments. It consists in a critical inquiry of life’s most basic questions (for example, how do we know anything? What is real? What is a mind and how does it work?). A philosophers’ answers to these basic questions are relevant to both science and real-world problems. 

Physics

B.A.

The physics major program is designed to enable a major to graduate with a sound and thorough preparation in fundamental physics. The program prepares a student for subsequent graduate study or for employment in physics, engineering, and many other applied physical science fields. Individual study and participation in ongoing research within the department are encouraged for all those who go through the program. Research opportunities also exist in undergraduate research programs with department faculty and in programs sponsored by the American Institute of Physics and the National Science Foundation on a competitive basis.

Political Science

B.A.

The Political Science program provides both undergraduate and graduate students with the critical-thinking and writing skills required for civic engagement in a democratic society. The Department is also committed to a curriculum that explores all aspects of politics so as to develop informed, engaged, and thoughtful global citizens. Our graduates then go on to pursue careers in the public, non-profit, and private sectors. Others pursue further study in political science, law, public service and administration, criminal justice, non-profit administration, global politics, and international relations. The program also includes opportunities for internships related to domestic and international politics and study abroad.

Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies

B.A.

The Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies (PLWS) major is an interdisciplinary degree program which includes courses in Portuguese Language at all levels and Portuguese, Brazilian and Lusophone African literature, culture, and history, while taking full advantage of Rutgers–Newark’s proximity to the Portuguese-speaking community of Newark's Ironbound neighborhood.

Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology

B.S.

The dual major in psychiatric rehabilitation and psychology is a bachelor of science degree program offered jointly by the School of Arts & Sciences-Newark (SASN) and Rutgers School of Health  Professions (SHP). This unique program offers training in both psychiatric rehabilitation and psychology and provides educational and clinical preparation for a wide variety of professional roles in psychiatric rehabilitation and community mental health settings.

Psychology

B.A.

Psychology is the multidimensional scientific study of behavioral and mental processes. Psychologists study the structure and function of the brain and nervous system; basic processes such as  perception and cognition; and complex phenomena such as development, individual behavior, group dynamics, personality, and abnormal behavior. Students learn foundational and modern theoretical perspectives on mental processes and behavior across these areas and delve into the scientific research that supports them. Psychology majors acquire the skills and knowledge to pursue graduate training in clinical or research psychology or to enhance the pursuit of related professions such as education, medicine, social work, or criminal justice.

Public and Nonprofit Administration

B.A.

The Public and Nonprofit Administration major is designed to prepare students for lives and careers in public service and civic engagement. The program, which is rooted in the concept of experiential learning, is designed to provide students with hands-on educational experiences that allow them to broaden and enhance the spirit of service which may already be present within.
