Accounting

B.S.

Accounting is an integral part of every business. Accounting professionals help to ensure that firms are run efficiently, public records are kept accurately, and taxes are paid properly and on time. They analyze and communicate financial information for various entities such as companies, individual clients, and federal, state, and local governments. Beyond carrying out the fundamental tasks of the occupation—providing information to clients by preparing, analyzing, and verifying financial documents—many accountants also offer budget analysis, financial and investment planning, information technology consulting, and limited legal services.

Africana Studies

B.A.

The Africana Studies undergraduate program is geared towards both the scholarly and the working world. We aim to produce graduates who are ready for advanced graduate study in the humanities or social sciences; we also aim to produce professionals who can work in a variety of fields that require an understanding of the history and cultures of African and African-descended peoples.

Anthropology

B.A.

Anthropology is the study of humans, past and present. A central concern of anthropologists is the application of knowledge to the solution of human problems. Anthropologists are highly specialized in our research interests, yet we remain generalists in our observations of the human condition and we advocate for a public anthropology that is committed to bringing knowledge to broad audiences.

Art, Specialization in Art History

B.A.

Through their studies of the history of art, students acquire not only an understanding of artistic styles within their cultural context, but also are introduced to the many methodological and theoretical avenues through which the history of art may be investigated. In addition to courses in art history, students have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of internships in the metropolitan region in museums and nonprofit art-related institutions. Over the course of their studies, art history students hone their writing and research skills and are introduced to the variety of professional applications of their degree, from academia to museums to the corporate world.

Art, Specializtion in Fine Art

B.A.

A blend of studio-based, social practice, theory and research, the Art major builds on Newark’s historical roots in art, activism and community building. Responding to a range of interests and emerging issues in the arts, we have designed a curriculum to help students build foundations for satisfying, sustainable, ethical, diverse and life-long careers in the arts as well as other professional sectors of our society.

Biology

B.A.

The biology major introduces students to the fundamental concepts, principles, and major applications/techniques in cellular and molecular aspects of biology, as well as ecology and evolution. The major provides a solid foundation in biology and also permits students to specialize in any of the major branches of biology. The BA degree in Biology is offered as a joint program between Rutgers University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) through their Federated Department of Biological Sciences. The BA major requires 38 credits of coursework in biological sciences, plus cognate courses in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Courses are offered on both the Rutgers and NJIT campuses.

Chemistry

B.A.

The undergraduate course of study for chemistry, certified by the ExternalAmerican Chemical Society, prepares students for careers as chemists in pharmaceutical, chemical, and consumer products industries, and for advanced training in top-ranked Ph.D. programs. Additionally, many chemistry graduates continue their education in medical, dental, or pharmacy schools.

Clinical Laboratory Sciences

B.S.

A major in clinical laboratory sciences (CLS) leading to the bachelor of science degree is offered jointly by the Department of Biological Sciences at Rutgers University-Newark and the Rutgers School of Health Professions (SHP). The major is offered at the Newark College of Arts and Sciences (NCAS). Students graduating with degrees in CLS become members of health care teams contributing to the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Computer Science

B.A.

The Computer Science major provides students with computer programming, algorithms, and mathematics courses designed to give a solid technical understanding of the area, from microchips to the Internet. The major culminates in a Senior Project, in which students design and build a substantial piece of software which addresses a real-world problem.
